Do you agree with this quote from "My Big Fat Greek Wedding"?
"The man may be the head of the family, but the woman is the neck. She tells the head where to look."
Public Comments
- Haha No They should both be the head and neck.
- Not really the neck is usually what holds the head doesn't tell it where to look...well so to speak.
- No, its typical babble found in movies these days. Nothing more, nothing less...It is untrue, unfounded and unwarranted. It is part of the continuing attempt to marginalize men.
- My favorite quote from that movie is... "Some of us maybe oranges and some may be apples; but in the end we're all just fruit."
- The only part of that movie that I agree with is that glass cleaner can be used in the treatment of most ailments.
- That's often the way it worked in traditional marriages; wives had to be subversive and manipulative in order to gain some control over the family...it wasn't "becoming" for a wife to be too overbearing. Luckily, most people have gotten past that kind of inequality in their marriages.
- The muscles in the neck are controlled by the brain and that's in the head ;)
- Anatomically speaking, that's not true; the brain controls pretty much all of the motor functions in the body. In other words, the brain (located inside the head) tells the neck which way to move the head, the neck can't do it by itself. This quote is just a bad attempt at "showing" that women are supposedly smarter than men and they need to tell us what to do because we're too stupid to do anything ourselves. Sorry if I sound like a jackass, but beliefs like this one really annoy me.
- yea i agree with it.
- You got it wrong. "The woman is the neck, and she can turn the head any way she wants." I'd agree more if the woman were the heart, which keeps everything alive.
- i agree with this because my dad is the leader in the family but my mom guides us
- Hell yeah!
- Generally, no. But I totally disagree with the notion that men should be the head of the family. However, in cases where this does happen (many people still believe this is how it should be) I think there are cases in which wives allow their husband's to believe they have more of a say than they actually do (as in MBFGW). But in some cases, men truly are the head of the house and women have no control. But it can never be taken as a statement that encompasses all of marital relationships.
- It is not just a quote from the movie, it is an ancient proverb in many European cultures. So, there must be something to it, if so many people of so many different backgrounds and generations found it to be a valuable lesson to share with their children and grandchildren.
- Hahaha =o) I don't agree obviously, it needs to be a partnership, but that was still nice =o)
- The neck doesn't tell the head where to look. The brain, held inside the skull, sends signals to the muscles of the neck that tell which way the neck turns.
- I can see how that would apply to the family in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, but that's not always true.
- I hated that movie.
