Public Comments

  1. Some. Ones that are really really really into being Greek.
  2. hmm yes and no
  3. Hmmm, I've been living in Crete for almost 7 years now, we are literally "adopted" by all the families in our street (a dozen households which are all related to each other) and in my opinion YES, this is what Greek families are like. At least "our" Greek families are like that.
  4. Well, the movie was mainly about stereotypes which were represented in a more exaggerated way than the usual. But, greek families are generally big. I personally have around 20 aunts and uncles, and more than 40 first cousins from both sides of the family. We live close and we are close to each other. So that means we are pretty much like the family in the movie:) Greek families have strong bonds. We do get all together and have celebrations, especially on our weddings or engagements. We are loud people, we help each other, we love a good celebration and a good friendly dispute:)
  5. In the revelance with the size, yes, its that big. But with the atittude protrayed in the movie, not. Not anymore, maybe 40 years ago.
  6. Weirder.
  7. in traditional size yes, but today the birth rate of Greece is1.3 children per woman. In mentality some parts were true some false. The movie potrays an old fashioned Greek family who left in the 50's so they hold true of those traditional values. One BIG fault of the movie was that Toula (who was 30yrs old) didnt go to University and her father didnt care and even dissaproved (in fear of leaving him). Today this thing does not exist, Greek parents value education highly and most of the Greek youth have a degree in something. Also the very conservative father who doesnt allow his daughter to date does not exist in modern Greece. Most Greek girls date when they are 15 and even younger.
  8. most are
  9. Most Greek families whether big or small ar closely mixed with all the their relatives and most of the time (thongs) things get out of hand. But that is the Greatness of the Greek Spirit. Family above all. Staying in close support to each other and often mixing in each others lives, One other factor is that relatives usually are living close to each other and is easy to be in contact. Contrary to other Europeans who go their separate ways Greeks stay close and care and help other family members. @ Pandora. I did not edit the word that made you so triumphant "na mou tin peis akoma mia fora" Giati mana mou me kynigas etsi? I'm far below your league. Stick to JD and the man without Hope.
  10. I was in bed but couldn't sleep as I was concerned about a friend who is unwell. So I came down to tire myself on Y!A, looked in on this question and AIRPOLE gave me a good laugh with his typing error of:- "thongs get out of hand" Anyway, I suppose I should also answer the question which in my opinion, families of the diaspora are still exactly as portrayed in the film simply because they left their homeland however many years ago when things (not thongs) were still like that and traditional values remain unchanged. @ Airpole, what is the matter with you tonight, Are you in love or something! You mention thongs in this question and knickers in another one! synkaintrothou mana mou!
  11. 20 years ago maybe, I'm not sure. But now... no I hate this movie
  12. LOL, ok I think I can answer this question pretty well. Firstly, I am Australian (not of Greek background) who just happened to come to Greece and by chance met a local, got married, etc etc. So I can give insight into both Greek families here and back in Oz (there are tens of thousands of Greeks in Australia, Melbourne alone has the third largest Greek population outside of Greece). Anyway, I think the Greek families are more like that away from Greece, say in Australia, or in America which is where the film is based. I am also living away from my country and my culture and you find that you want to immerse yourself in it because you miss it and you dont want your culture and your traditions to die. For example I have been missing Australia a lot, so I've been ordering UGG boots on Ebay, downloading Aussie soaps and films, I have a Aussie paintings and Sydney prints in my house proudly displayed and I care more about Australia day and Anzac day now than I did when I lived there. Its the same for the Greeks (and any other people living away from home). In Australia, my greek mates families were the same. They had the huge houses with faux columns on the outside with statues of mythological characters in the front, and there were never gardens, just concrete that they would hose down, and yes hundreds and hundreds of relatives. You can afford having heaps of kids in Australia, its so ridiculously expensive here. My Greek husband here in Greece works 2 jobs, 7days a week with only 2 mornings off a week. I told him that if he put in the same effort in Australia we'd be totally well-off instead of just scraping by. Sorry for going on a bit. But anyway, yes Greek families are like that, but more so away from Greece. Like in Australia and America where perhaps in missing their home country and traditions etc, they get a bit carried away and obsessed in everything "Greek" :) Edit - lol Greek Goddess, where do you live? I live in Symi, and it must be the 'village mentality', because yes there are some girls dating at 15 and younger, but they have to be very careful how they go about it, because some are already branded as tramps. My brother in law has a 'when its dark' curfew for his daughter unless a male relative is with her. Luckily since she turned 18 and has had a 'nice respectful' boyfriend, he is relaxed somewhat with my sister-in-laws coaxing. And I find that a lot of girls have to date on the sly and be carefeul who sees them where they go, etc etc. Lol, but sometimes I think that this island is in a time warp of 50 years ago, hahaha. A lot of the old women here do nothing but scrub down the stairs outside their houses with bleach, make sweets, and stare off into the distance in the chairs outside their houses once all the chores have been done and re-done. And then try to chat anyone's ears off who pass by! I hope I dont turn into that!
  13. The Greeks I know are not like this family..LOL! but they are cool as well. I think it's such a funny movie , but it's overrated ;)
